How to Handle Life's Curve Balls

This week has been incredible.  My first hard copy published work arrived in the mail, Average to Ah-Mazing is already half way through, I have been asked to contribute to more publications and blogs, I am sending out workshop proposals to organisations who are entering 2017 planning stages, my next free webinar runs next Monday and I am in my second month of a Mastermind collaboration I was invited into.  

 

I thought my plate was full.  But life didn't care.  

 

Last week Handsome Hubby tore a ligament, forcing him onto crutches - this means the majority of the taxi service, the housework and the cooking has fallen to me.  

 

As stressful as this has been at times, two wonderful realisations have shone though for me.  

 

Firstly, it shows how much HH does normally contribute to our life administration AND how wonderfully helpful my teenage bonus children can be (you do have to ask though).  

 

So whilst I am feeling really lucky overall (big picture!), today I am feeling completely overwhelmed and I can feel my stress levels starting to rise.  There is just not enough time in the day for me to get everything done that I need to do. And I know I am not the only person who's ever felt this way.

 

All of us, throughout our lives, have times when life has thrown a curve ball at us and we've need to make changes and adapt to the new situation.  

 

For some, like me, the change has been for a small amount of time and things will go back to "normal" soon.  For others, like a friend who's husband broke his leg and is incapacitated for 12 months, the curve ball feels more like a boulder and huge changes had to be made.  

 

How do you remain calm and composed when you know things must be taken care of and it has the capacity to seem like too much?

 

These have been my strategies over the past week:

 

  • Sleep, sleep and sleep. My day is longer right now, but when I can go to bed I do.  Read a light "easy" book for 15 minutes and I'm out.  No lounging on the couch and falling to the "TV trance".  

 

  • Cut out the alcohol.  I’ve halted all consumption so I can sleep better and wake feeling more energised. 

 

  • Ask for help.  The kids are helping around the house.  Some friends are helping drive the kids to their commitments.   You don’t have to do it all alone.

 

  • Nutrition.  I am eating a lot more fruit and vegetables this week.

 

  • Vitamins.  I’ve upped my magnesium intake which is apparently good for my stress levels (I'm not a doctor, but it was prescribed for me once during a particularly busy time so I've started again).

 

  • Two minutes of meditation in the morning before I get out of bed.  Just being quiet and setting my intentions for the day ahead helps me feel more in control.

 

  • Organisation.  I have revamped my to-do lists and tweaked some calendar appointments. 

 

  • Say NO.  I called on all my courage and emailed my publicist to tell her I won't be writing the articles she's requested this week.  This was a toughie (for me) but I feel as though I can breathe a bit more.   

 

  • Keep up my exercise.  I will admit this has been a tad difficult with my extra commitments this week but even just a 15 minute walk is important for my stress levels.

 

So that has been my strategy to make it through life's curve ball this week.
