A long, long time ago (before the internet was mainstream) newspapers would dedicate a section of the Valentine Day's edition to lovers wishing to publicly send love and appreciation to each other.
Hmm, maybe they still do 😍
Single and in our twenties, some friends and I (you know who you are) would book a table in a pub or restaurant, grab a newspaper and search for our names in the V Day section. Obviously, as we were single no messages were ever actually FOR us, but we had so much fun pretending they were. For those of us with quite uncommon names, the messages were few 😂
As I sit here and recall those days, the laughs we shared, the way we actually felt and enjoyed reading messages of love from and to others (we particularly enjoyed marriage proposals and secret admirer messages) it makes me smile. We WERE literally spending a day about love with people we LOVED and appreciated - even if it was dressed up as a tongue-in-cheek event where we had a chance to whinge and moan about our non existent love-lives.
What if, today, we forgot about the commercialism of Valentine's Day?
What if, today, we didn't call it out as bullsh@t and something to scoff at and ignore?
What if, today, we didn't see it as a day of separation (the couples v the singledoms)?
What IF, today we ALL made a conscious effort to show love and/or appreciation for those in our lives - personal and professional?
What IF, today we ALL showed kindness towards a stranger?
What IF, today, we collectively came together as one community?
I wonder what would happen?
